Cosmetic Surgery – Limiting the Risk
The number of cosmetic surgical procedures is on the rise, having more than tripled since the early 1990s. Now that plastic surgery miracles are widely touted in popular reality television shows, these numbers are expected to continue to rise. Liposuction, eyelid surgery, facelifts, tummy tucks, and breast augmentation are the most common procedures. While plastic surgeons contend that this increase is due to improved safety and ease of these procedures, these cosmetic procedures are not without risk and should be taken as seriously as other surgeries.
Cosmetic surgery is very lucrative for physicians and surgeons. There are many physicians performing cosmetic procedures who have limited education and experience with these procedures. Patients need to ask questions and seek out board-certified plastic surgeons rather than non-surgeons who may have learned about performing liposuction at an afternoon seminar. The death rate for surgeries performed in hospitals is about 1 in 100,000 procedures. The death rate for liposuction may be as high as a shocking 1 in 5,000 patients! Patients need to be cautious about physicians whose surgeries are performed in offices that are not properly equipped to deal with medical emergencies. Patients should also be suspicious of physicians willing to perform numerous procedures at the same time.
If you have been injured as a result of a cosmetic procedure, please contact Alley, Clark & Greiwe to discuss your rights. You may also obtain more information about the risks and benefits of cosmetic surgery at the American Board of Plastic Surgery's web site at www.plasticsurgery.org.
Ensuring Safety of Cosmetic Procedures
Cosmetic surgeries are not risk free.
To maximize safety, ensure that:
- Your surgeon is adequately trained and board-certified.
- Surgical facility conforms to strict safety standards and has properly trained personnel to monitor you during and after the procedure.
- Surgeon knows all of the drugs that you are current taking and has been given a full medical history.
- Extra safety precautions are being taken for extensive liposuction or more complicated procedures.
